Fr Peter or Pa Petera (as his Maori people call him) is the son of the Late Sophie & Michael Tipene. His parents both hail from the Hokianga (Motukaraka and Panguru) and he was born and raised in the Avondale Parish, Auckland.
He is one of five children, having an older brother and three younger sisters. Taught by the Sisters of Mercy and then the Christian Brothers, he then spent 9 years working in the Personnel / Payroll Dept of the Chief Postmaster’s Office. Finally responding to the ‘call’ to priesthood, he entered the Diocesan Seminary in 1989 and was ordained on the grounds of his Marae, ‘Waipuna’, Panguru in 1994.
He has served as Assistant Priest in Panguru - Pawarenga and Avondale Parishes, and as parish Priest of Onehunga and Epsom Parishes. Before he came to the HBC Parish he spent 2 years studying at St John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota, USA.
